Joseph Heap

Joseph Heap joined JSS Barristers as an Articling Student in 2020. Following his articles, Joseph became one of the firm’s Associates.

Joseph’s practice focuses on alternative dispute resolution; appeals; arbitration; charter of rights and constitutional law; construction law; corporate and commercial litigation; employment law; mediation; oil and gas litigation; and professional negligence and discipline.

Education

Joseph obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of Calgary, where he attained Dean’s List standing and was awarded the Margaret and Robert Montgomery Law Scholarship - an award which highlights academic merit and exceptional community service.

Prior to attending law school, Joseph completed his Bachelor of Engineering degree in electrical engineering from the University of Victoria. Following his degree, he spent five years working as an electrical and instrumentation field engineer in the oil sands in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Despite leaving the engineering field, Joseph continues to use his knowledge within his law practice and is also a registered Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta.

Community

Joseph also volunteered as a member of the trial division with Student Legal Assistance, a non-profit charity that provides free legal assistance to students and people who are unable to afford the services of a lawyer.

Personal

Born and raised in British Columbia, Joseph grew up on Vancouver Island. In his spare time, Joseph likes to play guitar, read and keep fit.
