Civil Claims Duty Counsel
Mike Albert

Mike Albert is an Associate who joined JSS Barristers in 2024, having previously practiced as a corporate commercial litigator at a large national law firm.

Mike currently maintains a broad civil litigation practice and supports clients with all stages of the dispute resolution trajectory. He has experience working on a range of business-critical disputes, including those related to commercial agreements, joint ventures and other commercial arrangements, energy (oil & gas), commercial leasing, and professional liability. Mike has acted on matters before all levels of court in Alberta and has participated in a number of large arbitrations.

Prior to joining JSS Barristers, Mike also completed a secondment with a large Canadian energy company, where he gained a valuable understanding of the legal and operational priorities from the client side, a perspective he now brings to his practice.

Education

Before attending law school, Mike obtained his BA (Honours) in political science from the University of Saskatchewan (2015). Upon completion of that degree, Mike remained at the University of Saskatchewan where he went on to receive his juris doctorate, with distinction (2019). During law school, Mike was actively engaged in student governance, having served as the student representative on the Faculty Council and, subsequently, as the College of Law representative on the University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union.

Community

Mike currently volunteers with the Civil Claims Duty Counsel (CCDC) project, which provides brief legal assistance to self-represented litigants with civil matters in the Alberta Court of Justice.

Personal

Outside of practicing law, Mike enjoys skiing (both downhill and water), golfing, cycling, scuba diving, and spending time with family and friends at the lake.
